Sports Motivation and Becoming the Best

Posted on 15 April 2008

Motivation is important in sports, if an athlete has to achieve glory, then they have to possess the needed motivation to excel and supersede themselves. Motivation should be seen as the emotion which makes legends out of rather ordinary sports people. However, how does sport motivation change an athlete?

It’s all about leading by example. If you want to talk about athletes you can focus on Jesse Owens who was the first black person to win an Olympic Gold Medal in Hitler’s Germany of all places. The fact that he won the gold medal isn’t the accomplishment, it’s the fact that he won against himself and all odds which is the most remarkable thing.

Today sports are a rather competitive arena. Think about sports such as Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer, Cricket or even archery. Different sports have different requirements and each sportsman will often face defeat before they understand how to win. Usually the motivation can usually be provided by a single person -The Coach.

The Coach is responsible for a team or individuals performance; he/she is responsible for putting a team together and guiding them or an individual towards the final goal. The coach has to also shoulder the responsibility for failure or for success. Take for instance soccer players, David Beckham has played for a number of clubs but his best performances were during his time at Manchester United and not Real Madrid. The reasons for this are that there was a lack of motivation from the coach. Motivation shows in the way the team taken on their opponent just the way Italy went on to win the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and Chelsea have been performing so well throughout the last 3 seasons in premiership leagues.

Two main kinds of coaches usually exist. One coach is the kind which tends to act like a drill sergeant and who shouts out his instructions and berates his players. They tend to create a negative environment where the lack of motivation which makes it hard for players to grow. On the other hand you have coaches who remain in control without losing their calm and who do not believe in achieving the required objectives in such a manner. These are usually the coaches who are able to motivate a team to reach and attain much greater heights.

Another important factor in sport motivation is the issue of feedback; a coach who provides negative feedback and humiliates a player in front of the rest of the team will demoralize this player and hamper their capacity for future performance as well. Another coach will choose the method of speaking to his player separately and understand why their performance was not that which was required and by so doing guide him towards success.

Motivation for belonging to a sport and trying to attain excellence and a state of continuous improvement tends to vary from one person to the other. Different people have different motives and most of the time it is not a single reason which spurs these people to success. At other times such reasons may even cause internal conflicts and rather than motivating these individuals will cause them to abandon their goals for other reasons.
