Sport Motivation – How to Become Best In Your Chosen Sports
Motivation and sport go hand in hand. The only way to taste glory in any sport can only be driven by motivation to excel and to perform beyond. Motivation can be looked upon as an emotion because it makes a legend out of an ordinary sportsman. But how can sport motivation transform a sportsman?
Sport motivation depends a lot on lead by example. So if we are talking about an athlete, then the best motivational example will be of Jesse Owens, who was the first black to win an Olympic Gold Medal in Hitler’s Germany. Winning a gold medal is not the biggest accomplishment, the fact that you won over your own self against all odds is the most remarkable thing.
Sport is highly competitive today whether you look at Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer, Cricket or even archery. Every sport has its own requirement and every sportsman will have to embrace defeat before they can learn to win. Most of the motivation in sports can be provided by just one person – The Coach.
The Coach is responsible for a team or individuals performance; he/she is responsible for putting a team together and guiding them or an individual towards the final goal. The coach has to also shoulder the responsibility for failure or for success. Let’s look at soccer players. Now David Beckham has played for so many clubs but he is considered to have performed better for Manchester United and not for Real Madrid. One of the most obvious reasons is lack of motivation from the coach. Motivation shows in the way the team taken on their opponent just the way Italy went on to win the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and Chelsea have been performing so well through out the last 3 seasons in premiership leagues.
Basically, there are two types of coaches. One who acts as a drill sergeant, shouts out instructions and berates players or sportsmen. They create a negative environment where motivation will not be able to grow. On the other hand, there is a coach who remains in control without losing his/her calm and doesn’t believe in achieving the objective through intimidation. These are the kind of coaches who can motivate a team to reach greater heights.
The second most important factor in sport motivation is feedback. A coach can provide a negative feedback and humiliate a player in front of the team and this will demoralize the player completely and hamper his/her future performance. On the other hand, there is another coach who will speak to his player separately, understand why his/her performance was not up to mark and guide him through the entire process, so that he/she can come victorious. This will offer plenty of motivation to any player.
The motivation for being a part of a sport and striving for excellence and constant improvement tends to change from person to person. And it’s a fact that different people have different motives and rarely is just one single most important reason that encourages people to achieve success. More often than not, these multiple motives tend to cause internal conflicts in sports people forcing them to let go of some of them for the greater and more important reasons.
