Many times if you show a interest and talent toward creating designs and making clothes then there still is a chance you get hired there without having a formal degree.

Looking into smaller design houses are perfect for people just starting out and wanting to get their feet wet. Many are very small with one or two people working there and the rest of the work is outsourced to other companies when they can not complete the work themselves. These are great to learn your skills and develop a portfolio. The hours are flexible so that you could start going to school to learn more about the trade and the work is usually part time. Leaving time to further improve and enhance your skills and training.
When you first start looking, showcasing your skills will be necessary to show the design house what you have to offer and that your skills are worthy to begin working there. Creating a portfolio with work you have created on your own will give them an idea of what you are capable of and the ideas you have about design. Also, have many different looks and designs will give an all around look to your portfolio showing that you can handle many different designs and have a knack for all of them.
Also, make sure you research the companies you want to work for. Having a varied portfolio is great as long as what you have also reflects the type of company you are applying for. If the company designs western ware and all you have is European designs they probably would not be very interested in you. Researching the companies, the design styles, and what they do will give you a leg up on getting the job. You will know what you are walking into before you get there.
Working for a design house is not impossible. Doing your homework before going in will give you a better chance at getting the job and learning more about the trade. It will be a lot of hard work and just because you like designing does not mean you will be good at or enjoy doing it on a regular basis. Making sure you know what the companies are about before applying will save a lot of time and effort for you and them. However, if designing is really something you want to do, then create a portfolio, find the companies, do your research, and you may very well be on your way to becoming a designer!
