Responsibilities of an Interior Designer

Posted on 29 August 2008

When you appoint an interior designer, you are hiring more than someone to enter and guide you what to put where. Depending on your chosen designer and your expectations, you can anticipate a variety of services. While some designers only offer opinions and options, others will do all of the shopping for designing and even roll up their sleeves to help with the painting or other jobs.

However, the basic things you should expect from any designer are:

  • Plan room space and layout
  • Choose color
  • Lighting options
  • Decorating styles
  • Furniture choice and placement
  • Flooring options
  • Walls and windows

However, the primary duty of an interior designer is to help the client see unique ways to design their space and layout as well as decorate it. A designer’s duty is not to change the client’s vision, but to understand their lifestyle and requirements and integrate those into a design that fits their personal tastes into a usable and brilliantly maintained space.
In some circumstances, the client may have their own style and need the designer to meet it while decorating their space, while in other cases the client may know exactly what they want the end result to look like, but just doesn’t have the expertise to make it happen. This can make a designer’s job very easy or extremely difficult as more and more responsibility for the project falls under their domain.

Some other responsibilities of an interior designer include:

  • Shopping for all accessories and furniture
  • Hiring sub contractors
  • Working hand-in-hand with contractors to sketch the remodeling project
  • Completing all sewing projects
  • Painting
  • Sanding floors
  • Purchasing artwork
  • Finding appropriate and unique accessories
  • Designing the layout of the room
  • Designing a sense of style or theme for the room
  • Deciding furniture placement
  • Choosing appropriate color schemes

So, the job of an interior designer can be as simple as offering their insight and style experience to enhance a room that is already finished, or it can involve working closely with architects and contractors to create a brand new space that fits both the client’s personal style as well as their requirements.Darren Williger is an over-caffeinated, low carbohydrate eating, winemaking enthusiast who writes for SiteKing.NET, HabitatRepair.com, and InsidePlanning.com.
