What Viral Marketing is All About

Posted on 25 December 2007

With the bad image that the word virus connotes, viral marketing is often seen in a suspicious and dangerous light. In truth however, viral marketing isn’t dangerous neither does it have any sinister origins or effects. Viral marketing could be defined in layman’s terms as “word of mouth” marketing; it is a type of marketing that encourages people to promote your products for free.

You can offer a free product, service or a great joke. By getting people from the world over to promote your products and services by sending your message by e-mail to their friends all over the world you gain a worldwide reach. The means of distribution of your message may even be through blogs sites, websites and other services. It’s the perfect way to get across to thousands and millions of people free of charge.

So how do you start your viral marketing campaign? It’s all very simple. All you have to do is attach a tag line at the bottom part of every single message that you send out in order to advertise any of your free products. You can easily watch as people forward this message to other people on their mailing lists who will also sign up for all the free services that you have to offer. In the end the number of people that will sign up may be so large that you’ll wonder why you even bothered with a paid marketing campaign in the first place.

Implementing a viral marketing campaign is a very simple affair if you choose to follow these guidelines which are very easy to follow:

Offer something to people for free. It should be something that is too good for people to pass up. People easily get drawn to great products and services that are offered for free.
Make it easy for people to transfer your message to other people. Your message should be so simple that it is easily forwarded to others. Anything that requires too much time and energy won’t get people interested in it.
Exploit the needs and wants of people. The secret to viral marketing is making people feel that they’re missing out on the next big thing unless they forward your message. No one wants to be left out of the next great thing. Use these motivations that drive people in order to build momentum for your project.
Uses existing networks. Place your message into areas that have already been in existence this includes blogs, forums, chat rooms etc.
Use other peoples resource. By using such resources to spread information about your product or service you can gain a lot of benefits. You can simply offer a free article to different affiliate programs and include your website link added to it. You can also use press releases that are distributed in the right places to market your project easily and effectively. By using websites and resources of other people in order to generate traffic, you do the necessary things simply and cheaply too. You can reach more people than you would have done by spending a lot of your money.
